New census reults released today from Statistics New Zealand has revealed three out of every four households at the 2013 Census had internet access, an increase of 34% since 2006.

The Queenstown-Lakes district has the highest proportion of households with access to the internet, at 88%. The Wairoa district has the lowest proportion, at 55%.

“Around 95% of households earning over $100,000 have access to the internet, while 45% of households earning $20,000 or less had access,” says Gareth Meech, Census customer focus manager.

The proportion of households with access to a cellphone continues to rise, and is now 84%, up almost 10% since 2006. Conversely, households with access to a landline telephone has dropped to 86%, down 6% since 2006.

Just over half of one-person households have access to the internet, up from a third in 2006.

Since 2006, a further 285,000 households have access to the internet, and further 195,642 households have access to a cellphone.

The number of households with a landline telephone has dropped by 20,000 households.
