Review: Lexmark X5650 Multifunction Printer
Sun, 1st Feb 2009
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The X5650 is a multifunction printer with scanning and copying capabilities at the kind of price point we’ve come to expect from these all-in-one units. Where it differentiates itself is by adding fax to the feature mix - not that this is new technology, but it’s unusual to see it at this price point.

Pros: Print quality for basic documents and images was fairly good and moderately quick. Button layout on the X5650 is quite logical, and we’re big fans of Lexmark’s recycling efforts, which include a pre-paid envelope for returning the cartridges that come with the X5650.

Cons: Driver installation was a nightmare - slow and crash-prone. Eventually, we gave up and just downloaded the cut-down drivers from Lexmark’s Web site. This really shouldn’t be necessary. If you’re also keen on photo printing, it’s worth noting that while the X5650 does have card slots, there’s no LCD screen - only a single-line LED display.

Verdict: A good buy for those who intermittently need faxing, but the drivers need work.
