Update: 10k winner hangs up on Apple
Mon, 24th Jan 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

After hyping the fact that its App Store was on the verge of notching up a mighty 10 billion downloaded apps, Apple announced the deal had been done on Saturday, January 22nd.

The 10 billionth app downloaded, Paper Glider, was purchased by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, who will soon be the proud owner of a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing.

Pulling no punches in the face of mounting competition, “The App Store has revolutionised how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”

Microsoft recently asked the US Patent and Trademark Office to deny Apple’s 'App Store' trademark, which it filed for in 2008, saying it’s a generic term that anyone should be allowed to use.

Update: An amusing story has since popped up on CultOfMac saying that Gail Davis hung up on Apple's VP of iTunes, Eddy Cue, thinking that it was a prank call.

“I thought it was a prank call,” she said. “I said, ‘Thank you very much, I’m not interested’ and I hung up.”
