Ongoing concern over Steam breach
Tue, 14th Feb 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The successful hacking of Steam in November may still be a problem, according to Gabe Newell of Valve, the security team investigating the breach.

So far the team has found evidence that the intruders may have gotten away with more information than originally thought, Newell says in a post on the Steam news page.

"The intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008,” Newell writes.

"This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.”

On top of this, there have been reports that Steam was suffering outages yesterday due to an unidentified fault with the platform’s UPS.

A tweet at the time of the outages said Valve were investigating the problem, and a new post from Mike Blaszczak on the official Steam forums said the outages had now been fixed.

"We are up and running at a normal user load. There are a couple of lingering issues which we will continue to work on until they are sorted.”

Valve say the outages were caused by power failure in one of its data centers, which means they were unrelated to the on-going security issues faced by users.
