300m Android devices activated: Google

Google’s Android platform has surpassed 300 million activations, the company’s senior vice president of mobile and digital content, Andy Rubin, has revealed to celebrate the first day of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

In a post on the Google Mobile blog, Rubin also says 850,000 new Android devices are activated every day, representing 250% year-on-year growth.

"Each and every day, we are humbled by the trajectory of Android and our partners,” Rubin writes.

"These numbers are a testament to the break-neck speed of innovation that defines the Android ecosystem.”

The Android Market has grown from 150,000 apps this time last year to around 450,000, and over one billion apps are downloaded every month.

Of course, Apple’s app store hit its 15 billionth app download in July and is about to cross over 25 billion shortly, meaning it’s tracking at well over one billion per month. In activations, iOS is probably still ahead of Android too; there had been 250 million activations at October last year, and 37 million iPhones and 15 million iPads were sold in the fourth quarter alone

Where do you think the iOS/Android battle is headed? How long can both platforms keep growing for, and what chance does Windows Phone have against such overwhelming numbers? Post your comments below.
