All-Stars struggles after launch
Tue, 27th Nov 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Despite much anticipation from critics and gamers, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale has barely managed to crack the top 40 in the UK.

That’s right, the game that is supposed to pay homage to Sony’s legacy hasn’t impressed the market, only just scraping into position 38 on the charts across both PS3 and PS Vita platforms.

All-Stars was beaten by Lego The Lord of the Rings, which made it to number six this week, while Disney Epic Mickey 2 made it to 34 and Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse even managed to make enough non-sequitur popular culture references to get to 35.

While the numbers from the US haven’t been released yet, it’s fair to assume they’ll reflect much the same thing.

Timing has also played an issue, as Sony always played a dangerous game by launching so close to some of the year’s biggest titles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II remains top of the UK charts for a second week, but did have a huge sales drop of 81 per cent – don’t expect it to hang around there too much longer.

In fairness to All-Stars, it has only been available in the UK for a very limited time, being released to the general public just a few days ago. But with initial sales not looking great, it’s possible the game has been overshadowed by some bigger names – Black Ops II the most obvious of those.

This hasn’t been helped by the game’s reviews, which have not been fantastic. It currently holds a fairly middle-of-the-range 76 on Metacritic; GameSpot gave the game a 6.5/10, while the kinder IGN ranked the game an 8/10.

What do you guys think? Will the announcement of new character DLC and heavy promotion from Sony be enough to garner strong holiday sales for All-Stars, or is it doomed to fail? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
