Apple has announced the number of apps downloaded from its App Store has topped 15 billion, just six months after hitting 10 billion in January.

That's almost a billion downloads a month, spread out among Apple's 200 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users worldwide.

Apple adds that developers have been paid over US$2.5 billion for their apps to date.

Apple executive Philip Schiller took the opportunity to thank the giant firm's users and developers.

"In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen,” Schiller says.
