FYI, this story is more than a year old

Last week Instagram launched Hyperlapse – an app that speeds up shaky videos and turns them into time lapses and creates smooth-looking videos.

Time lapsing is a video technique that captures footage at a lower framerate than normal, but videographers and some fancy, expensive equipment speed up the captured video to show the original shot at a much faster rate. Like those cool videos of flowers blooming or the sun setting and rising. Hyperlapse turns footage from your phone into time lapse videos, without the fancy equipment. Itr's available for free from the app store.

"Traditionally, time-lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film”, Instagram wrote in an official blog post. "Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilisation technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel - a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment."

It's also a way to stabilise or smooth out footage and make it look more professional. However, users can't edit videos like they can on Vine.

After downloading the Hyperlapse app, users can tap to record and tap again to stop. Then you can select the playback speed, making shots up to 12 times faster. Videos are then saved to the camera roll and can be shared to Instagram or Facebook.
