Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference has sold out just two hours after the company announced the dates, showing just how popular the OS X and iOS platforms continue to be for developers.

To be held from June 11 to 15 in San Francisco, the event will see Apple sharing ‘the latest news' about iOS 5 and the forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion, as well as presenting over 100 technical sessions to help people learn to develop, deploy and integrate apps on the iPhone, iPad and Mac platforms.

The dates were announced on the same day as Apple presented its quarterly results, revealing sales of 35.1 million iPhones, 11.8 million iPads, and 4 million Macs.

The company's cash reserves are US$110.2 billion, a spiralling figure that Apple is struggling to control.

Videos of the WWDC sessions will be available shortly after they are presented, and Apple is also giving away 150 student scholarship tickets for promising young developers. Applications for these tickets close on May 2 (you must be a member of either the iOS developer programme, the iOS developer University programme, or the Mac developer programme to enter).

Apple shares rose almost US$50, or 8.9%, throughout the day, currently sitting on exactly US$610.
