Apple in music-subscription talks
Mon, 11th Oct 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Apple is once again rumoured to be in talks with the major record labels about a subscription-based music service that would offer unlimited access to music for a monthly fee.

According to a report from the New York Post, iTunes boss Eddy Cue has been talking to label bosses, trying to figure out how the music industry and its partners can move forward.

“One source said the service could have tiered pricing ranging from $10 to $15, although there are issues to be ironed out, including how much music would be included in each tier and how long consumers would be able to access that content,” said the report.

It sounds like some of the label bosses are supportive of the idea, hoping it could re-energise digital music sales.

To be honest we’d be surprised if Apple wasn’t in talk with music bosses for some sort of cloud-based, iTunes subscription service.

After all, Microsoft has its own plans for the online music space and will launch its digital entertainment service ‘Zune’ later this year in New Zealand.

Would you be prepared to pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to iTunes? And how much would you part with?
