Apple iPad set for July production
Wed, 5th Jun 2013
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Apple looks set to produce the fifth-generation iPad in July, with the iPad mini set to follow suit in November.

That is according to a new report by Asian website DigiTimes, which claims an initial five million iPads will be shipped during September in time for a third quarter launch.

"Volume production of a new-generation 9.7-inch iPad will begin in July-August with shipments in the third quarter estimated at five million units," the article reads.

"Meanwhile, a second-generation iPad mini may see its volume production postponed from September to November, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers."

Citing a source close to Apple's partner supplier in Taiwan, the production dates would actually represent a delay for the Cupertino-based company, with rumours claiming the company can't meet demand.

Yet following news of a deal with Pegatron late last month to assist chief Apple manufacturer Foxconn with producing the devices, it may be a case of the company preferring two launches as opposed to one.

Digitimes begs to differ however, stating:

"Some market watchers believe the delay is because iPad sales were seriously impacted by iPad mini in 2012, and so to avoid the situation from happening again, Apple has turned its product focus for 2013 to the new 9.7-inch iPad.

"However, some market watchers believe the delay is due to the supply chain being unable to meet the mass-production schedule.

"Market watchers originally estimated Apple's tablet shipments to reach 80-100 million units in 2013 with iPad mini accounting for 35% of the volume and 9.7-inch iPads 65%.

"However, with iPad mini's volume production delayed to the fourth quarter, total iPad shipments for 2013 may be lower."
