Apple sold 300,000 iPads on first day
Tue, 6th Apr 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Official numbers are in, and Apple confirms it sold more than 300,000 iPads on launch day.

The iPad launched to positive reviews in the US last weekend, and within its first day more than 300,000 units were sold. This number includes deliveries of pre-ordered iPads and deliveries to Apple channel partners in addition to sales at Apple’s retail stores. The sales account for the wi-fi only iPad, as the 3G version isn’t available until the end of this month.

Apple also said that more than a million iPad apps and more than 250,000 e-books had been purchased in the first day.

In a release, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, “It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world – it’s going to be a game changer.”

He added, “iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.”

In contrast, Apple sold 270,000 iPhones in its first 30 hours, but that product required a contract and was an unknown quantity, unlike the iPad, which is familiar to iPhone users. While the number made for a strong first day, some analysts were commenting that they thought Apple had sold more than 700,000 iPads in the first day.

But as the 3G iPad launches and the device gets its international release, it seems likely that the iPad will continue keep up its strong sales.
