Apple to discontinue Magic Mouse? - Updated
Fri, 5th Aug 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

A rumour has surfaced on the internet suggesting Apple is looking at phasing out its Magic Mouse device in favour of the Trackpad, a device more closely aligned with the direction of the company’s operating software.

A post on Cult Of Mac cites a retail source suggesting Apple is not replenishing its Magic Mouse inventory.

The Trackpad is thought to be more compatible with the direction Apple’s operating software is taking, as the company looks to align its desktop range with its touch-based iPad and iPhone devices.

The rumour has led to much consternation from the Apple community, who say the Trackpad is awkward to use doesn’t provide the precision of a mouse necessary for using tools like Photoshop.

Update: Cult Of Mac has updated its report to say that Apple has indeed cancelled the old Magic Mouse part number, but is introducing a new number, meaning the device is more likely being updated than decommissioned. Read the revised report here.
