Online scammers are already exploiting the earthquake disaster in Haiti, in a bid to dupe people out of their money.
Several scams of the 419 variety, capitalising on people’s desire to help, have emerged this week.
One scammer sent out emails purporting to be from the British Red Cross, seeking donations. In fact the BRC has launched an appeal, but the scam was detected because the scammer was using a payment service not used by the Red Cross.
Anyone receiving an email appeal for donations to relief in Haiti should check with the organisation whose name appears on the email, to determine whether it is legitimate.
