Facebook Phone report wrong
Tue, 21st Sep 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Facebook has denied reports that it’s secretly working on a mobile phone that would integrate Friends lists and other social-networking functions.

The report suggested that the firm is developing an operating system to be used on hardware created by an unnamed third-party.

"Facebook is not building a phone," a Facebook spokesperson told CNET. "Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this. The people mentioned in the story are working on these projects."

Two senior Facebook executives (with OS experience) were said to be involved in the project.

"The bottom line is that whenever we work on a deep integration, people want to call it a 'Facebook Phone' because that's such an attractive soundbite, but building phones is just not what we do."

Building operating systems on the other hand...? Would you buy a Facebook mobile phone?
