A number of users took to internet forums this morning, enquiring as to why Facebook was down.

When trying to posted status updates, users were met with a "Couldn't Update Status" error message from the Social Media giant, which reported:

"There was a problem updating your status. Please try again in a few minutes.

Lasting a few hours during the early hours of this morning, a spokesperson for Facebook claims that the website is now back to normal.

“Earlier this morning, while performing some network maintenance, we experienced an issue that prevented some users from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time," the company told The Next Web.

"We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused.”
