Gears of War 3 gets dedicated servers, multiplayer beta
Fri, 8th Oct 2010
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Epic Games has lifted the lid on a new batch of Gears of War 3 multiplayer information, including a shift to dedicated servers and the revelation of a multiplayer beta.

Clearly intended to address the concerns that fans have had with the multiplayer components of the previous two games, Epic announced that Gears of War 3 will feature dedicated servers. However, there's no word yet as to whether Epic Games will host Australasian servers.

Also revealed is that Gears of War 3 will feature true host migration and a leveling system complete with medals that will reward the player with unlockables in-game. The Social matches introduced to Gears of War 2 (via Title Update 6) will also return.

New gameplay modes were detailed, such as 'Capture the Leader', which combines the Guardian and Submission game types from Gears of War 2; teams select a leader and then must capture the opposing team's leader for 30 seconds in order to win the match. There will also be a revised King of the Hill mode, that incorporates elements of the Annex game type.

No date has been specified for the multiplayer beta at the time of writing, but stay tuned to Game Console for more information as it comes to hand. In the meantime, check out this video featuring some of the new Gears of War 3 executions courtesy of Joystiq.
