FYI, this story is more than a year old

Free retro photo app Instagram has finally been introduced on the Android platform, meaning you can expect even more square, 70s-looking photos in your Facebook and Twitter streams in the future.

A couple of features – tilt-shift and blur – haven’t made the Android version, but the release is sure to build on the app’s massive 30 million-strong user base.

Instagram’s publishers announced a few other stats to go with the launch, saying over 430,000 people had joined the waiting list for the Android app, and that over 1 billion photos had been uploaded in the app’s 18 months on the market, with the rate currently standing at around 5 million per day.

The app allows users to digitally edit photos, cropping into square frames and applying filters to imitate the Polaroid and Instamatic styles of the 70s, and then share to places like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare and Flickr (the latter isn’t currently supported in the Android version but is said to be coming ‘very soon’).

In December 2011 Apple named Instagram its App of the Year.
