Instagram introduces 5 new filters - about time!

Instagram has today announced the release of five new filters, a move to keep up with ever-improving mobile phone cameras.

Instagram added filters to its photo-sharing app back in 2010, a feature now ubiquitous across social networks and other editing apps.

The five new additions, Slumber, Crema, Ludwig, Perpetua and Aden, are the first to be added since Mayfair and Willow launched in December 2012. It takes the total number of filtering options up to 25.

“Since Instagram launched four years ago, our phone cameras have vastly improved,” explains the Facebook-owned firm.

“The original Instagram filters compensated for lower image quality, giving you more control over the look and feel of a photo. These new filters are more subtle - taking advantage of higher image quality, while still giving you a simple way to capture the mood, tone and feelings of the moment.”

Along with the five new filters, Instagram has also announced three new tools. Users can now upload slow-motion video, see comments appear in real time - without having to refresh the feed - and adjust the photo's perspective using the Adjust tool.

Users also now have the ability to personalise their tray of filters, and the filter previews view has been updated.

“Filters have been synonymous with Instagram from day one,' Instagram says. “They were the original tool offered to help people capture and share photos that looked and felt as beautiful as they did in real life.”

Instagram says it is inspired by the photography, art, fashion and design of the global Instagram community. “Photography trends have evolved, and we’ve seen tremendous creativity within the community, not only in the moments they share, but in the time spent carefully composing and editing photos and videos to bring out emotions and make them beautiful.
