Apple has sold over five million of its new iPhone 5 just three days after its initial launch.
The world's most valuable company has also reported more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, self-proclaimed as the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.
But the news can hardly come as a surprise for Apple, as TechDay reported pre-orders had topped two million in just 24 hours of first trading, more than doubling the past record of the previous model.
The initial excitement drove Apple’s stock to new heights, as shares of the company sky-rocketed past US$700 in after-hours trading last week.
But as Apple enjoys the heightened demand for its new release, the increase of interest has exceeded the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are now scheduled to be shipped in October.
“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” says Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
"While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date.
"We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
The news has prompted Apple staff to create a Personal Pickup service for iPhone 5 customers starting across the U.S. yesterday, allowing buyers to purchase the device online with stores holding the product until the following day.
Designed to be the thinnest and lightest Apple device ever, the iPhone is available in the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada among others, and will be available in 22 more countries on September 28 (including New Zealand) and more than 100 countries by the end of 2012.
The company released pricing for the device which is available in either white & silver or black & slate and on offer to Kiwis for a recommended retail price of NZD$1049 inc. GST for the 16GB model, NZD$1199 inc. GST for the 32GB model and NZD$1349 inc. GST for the 64GB model.
