Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for Wii
Thu, 1st Mar 2007
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has to be one of the most anticipated titles for the Wii. Zelda fans all over the   world couldn’t wait to buy their Wii just so they could play this game. Being fairly new to the game franchise, it didn’t take long to realise what it is about this series of games that has so many people in love with it. The Legend of Zelda:   Twilight Princess heralds a new beginning in the series, taking the epic adventures of Link to new and unexpected   heights. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is quite a beautifully designed game that has a little bit of everything thrown in; action, adventure, role-playing and combat. And with an incredible storyline to match, The Legend of Zelda:  Twilight Princess seems like an exceptionally solid title, especially on the next-gen Wii console.

With the Wii’s interactive capabilities, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is a game that brings the world of Zelda  to life with rich, vibrant animation and exquisitely created backgrounds and environments. Even when viewing the game  at 480i resolution, the graphical representation and detail onscreen is still extremely impressive.

For those of you unfamiliar with the experience of the Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will provide you with  the learning curve you need to get up to speed with the console. Interaction is taken to a whole new level where every movement you make with the Wii remote is played out on screen. In TheLegend of Zelda: Twilight Princess,  iding a horse is now a completely interactive experience where you are able to control the movement and direction of  the horse (and other animals), with the angle and movement of your wrist. There are still quite a few push-button  commands required to carry out actions such as mounting and dismounting your horse. Dialogue is also controlled by  using your Wii remote to click on the characters onscreen. By far one of the most interesting areas of the game is how  you control the different animals.

The game begins with Link (who takes on your profile name after you create it), a farm boy who must adventure forth  through the vast and dangerous land of Hyrule to rescue Princess Zelda, who has been imprisoned. Before you get to  adventure though, Link must do his time in the village of Ordona by helping various characters out in an attempt to  acquaint you with the different aspects of controlling the character and the animals in the game. It’s a great way to improve on your coordination and to familiarise yourself with movement and interaction.

Movement is executed by a combination of using both the Wii remote and the Nunchuk. The Nunchuk controls actual  movement of your character (such as running, climbing, swimming), and controls the movement of animals in the game whilst the Wii remote controls interaction such as picking up objects or  reading signs.

In-game combat is again a combination of several elements and not all of it is easy to master. Stabbing your opponent  uses three different controls at once which is why it’s good to have time to practice before you start the main adventure.

Once adventuring begins though, it’s all on! You are eventually transported into a different dimension called the  ‘Twilight Realm’ where the main adventure unfolds. All sorts of beasties will emerge from the shadows including Orcs  and nasty Trolls just itching for some fresh meat. At this stage you may be thinking that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight  Princess is just another game for the kids, but things get a lot more serious once you begin adventuring.

And how does transforming into a wolf fit into your adventuring plans? Changing into a wolf and adventuring with a  strange looking monkey-like character named Midna is one of the highlights of the game. As a wolf, you get to do all  sorts of really cool things including seeing spirits through a unique ‘vision’ that you control using the directional buttons  on the remote. Midna acts as your guide throughout your adventures in the Twilight Realm, and many of the ‘spirits’  you encounter are followed closely by a rather annoying narrative from Midna. The voice acting in this game is unlike  any I have encountered before. I found it to be quite annoying more than anything else and it’s the only noticeable downside in the game. Dialogue that is spoken between characters seems to be a mixture of strange sounds and  laughter rather than voices.

The depth of this game is unreal. There is so much to do you are never left wondering what to do next. The mixture of  combat, quizzes and adventuring is just the right combination to keep you entertained for hours on end and is the perfect blend to get people totally addicted to the gameplay.

For those faithful fans of the Zelda franchise, this game is without a doubt, a must-have to add to your collection. For  those of you unsure of what to think, I can sympathise. Being unfamiliar with the franchise left me in a position to look at this game with an unbiased view. And I am happy to say that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is an extremely  well-developed game that everyone will find enjoyment in playing, no matter what your taste.

Pros• With so many different activities in the game, there is never a dull moment - even when the game’s pace slows down• Exquisitely developed environments and animation makes this game impressive, even at 480i resolution• Incredible character development and interaction

Cons• The voice acting is annoyingly repetitive and really isn’t voice acting, but rather repetitive giggling and odd sounds
