Microsoft reports strong Surface successor sales
Fri, 4th Oct 2013
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Less than two weeks after launching the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, Microsoft claims pre-order stock is close to selling out.

Unveiled on September 24, the new devices are an expansion of the current Surface family, with each benefitting from significant updates.

"It looks like pre-order stock of the Surface 2 (64GB) and Surface Pro 2 (256 GB and 512GB) are close to selling out," Microsoft said on the company's official blog site.

"We’re pretty happy about this of course given we just unveiled Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 and the new accessories to the world only a week or so ago."

Along with an expanded portfolio of new Surface accessories, which will be available at Microsoft retail stores, Redmond says the devices will go on sale across 22 markets initially on October 22.

Other notable pluses for the software giant include the selling out of the Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition, Type Cover 2 in Purple and Black, and Touch Cover 2 as pre-order stock.

Billed as the "most productive tablet for personal use", Surface GM of sales and marketing said the company had "definitely gotten a year smarter" when revealing the products late last month.

The strong start is a far cry from the US$900m hit the company took on previous Surface models, when the increase in sales figures suggesting Redmond has succeeded in addressing many of the criticisms levelled at past products.
