Microsoft tipped for Rdio acquisition
Fri, 5th Oct 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Microsoft is rumoured to be in talks to acquire the U.S. based digital music company Rdio, a start-up created by Skype co-founder Janus Friis.

The tech giant is allegedly discussing the prospect with the music firm as it increases its efforts on the music front.

While it remains speculation at this stage, the deal would appear to make sense for both parties, with the involvement of Friis seemingly an added benefit.

Rdio, housing on-demand access to over 18 million songs, connects people through music making them a viable option for Microsoft, who plan to introduce a new streaming service called Xbox Music.

But Rdio refused to comment on the story when asked by The Next Web, saying there "is nothing to talk about" and that the company will not "comment on rumours."

Microsoft followed a similar path, releasing a statement saying:

"We’re not commenting on speculation around Xbox Music.

"What we can say is we’re excited for Xbox Music as our definitive music service.

"It’ll bring great new ways to enjoy, share and discover new music on all your Windows 8 devices, Xbox 360 console and Windows Phone 8.

"We’ll let you know when we have more information to share.”
