An empty chair
The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Chinese democracy activist Liu Xiaobo, unable to attend because he is imprisoned for anti-government activities. China furiously denounced the award as "an obscenity”. An editorial in The China Daily said the award "is despising China’s national spirit through puffing up a criminal in China as a hero by some westerners”.
