Mortal Kombat X is gory but fun
Sat, 18th Apr 2015
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Mortal Kombat X may be gory and violent, but it's a lot of fun.  Mortal Kombat X comes off the heels of the very excellent "Mortal Kombat" that was released back in 2011. That game is arguably the best of the entire series, but NetherRealm Studios has still managed to make Mortal Kombat X just as good.  The only things missing from Mortal Kombat X are stage fatalities and there's no tag team mode either. However, the game adds tons of other new features to keep the gameplay feeling fresh and exciting.

Mortal Kombat X boasts a robust roster full of 24 fighters in total. This number grows with future DLC that will be out in the next couple of weeks. Many favourites are in the game such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero. There are also some cool new faces like Erron Black and Kotal Kahn just to name a few.  Each fighter has three different fighting variations for you to choose from. This slightly changes their movesets and style of gameplay. It's a neat feature as it gives you many reasons to experiment with all the different styles out there.

Aside from the movesets, each fighter also has two Fatalties and up to five Brutalities as well. The Fatalties are gory and bloody, as are the Brutalities. Both finishers look spectacular, although squeamish people are advised to look away as the violence is very graphic.  Although stage fatalities are gone, players can interact somewhat with the enviroment. You can pick up a branch off of a tree or leap from a tall pole to get away from your opponent. The level interaction is neat, although I wished there was more that could have been done with this feature.  The core gameplay in Mortal Kombat X is still as fun as ever. The game is 1080p and 60fps on all platforms (Xbox One version tested) so the gameplay is fast paced and fluid throughout. The loading times are also lightning fast and I didn't encounter any technical issues during my extensive playthrough.  Mortal Kombat X also has tons of great modes as well. The Story mode is like watching a Hollywood movie and you get to play as numerous characters from the roster. The story is shorter than the previous game I must say, but it was still epic and fun to experience.

Other modes in the game includes the classic arcade style Towers and a whole new feature called Faction Wars. Faction Wars is where you choose a team to play for and you can see your clan's ranking online. The Krypt makes a return, but plays more like a FPS dungeon crawler. The Krypt makes you have to earn the unlockables by solving puzzles and more.  Graphically, Mortal Kombat X is the best looking fighting game I have ever seen. The graphics are a step up from Killer Instinct as the character models and environments look amazing. The stages vary in design tpp as you will be fighting in numerous locations such as the icy woods or inside ancient temples.  Mortal Kombat X is an excellent sequel that builds upon the great Mortal Kombat game from 2011. It might be missing a few modes and characters, but the slightly altered gameplay and gorgoeus graphics make up for it. If you are a fighting game fan, you should definitely pick this up. Only people under 18 or those that don't like gory violence should avoid this.  Verdict: 9.0/10
