New Discworld game to be released? Thoughts?
Wed, 13th Mar 2013
FYI, this story is more than a year old

It’s been a while since a mainstream point and click game was released, but one of the genre’s defining universes could get another outing.

Rhianna Pratchett, writer of best-selling series reboot Tomb Raider, and daughter of Discworld author Terry Pratchett, told digitalspy.co.uk she would be interested in seeing a new Discworld game released.

If you aren’t a nerd, Discworld is a fictional universe set on a disc on the back of a turtle, and the books are some of the best-selling fantasy novels of all time.

There have been three instalments in the series, starting with Discworld in 1995, based on Guards! Guards!, followed by Discworld 2: Missing Presumed....!? in 1997, and most recently Discworld Noir in 2000.

Not hugely successful, the games have a certain place in the hearts of those who love the books, and evidently in the heart of Rhianna Pratchett.

“The original games I remember them very fondly. Every now and again, dad gets approached about a game,” she says.

“Dad is a gamer himself so he has an idea what he’s like to see, and we’ve just not got the right developer with the right pitch come knocking yet.

"I think dad is waiting to be impressed by developers. I think there’s a lot of potential there, and I know people have a lot of fond memories of all three Discworld games.”

Stepping back through the annals of history, it should be noted the original games weren’t entirely failures, and were in fact a big enough deal to secure the voice talents of Monty Python’s Eric Idle and Rob Brydon, the funniest thing to ever come out of Wales, followed closely by The Valleys, and a hilarious sheep I saw one time.

An even older, text-based game (must have been a real hoot) was released in 1986 entitled The Colour of Magic.

Would a new Discworld game have an audience? Would you buy it? Download illegally? Let us know what you think in the comments.
