Original actors sign on for new Transformers game
Tue, 19th Jun 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

If you're between the ages of 20 and 30, you'll be hearing some familiar voices in Activision's latest addition to the Transformers gaming franchise.

Developers High Moon Studios have enlisted the voice-acting prowess of Peter Cullen and Greg Berger for their upcoming title, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

Those names might not mean much to you, but Cullen and Berger performed the original voices of Optimus Prime and Grimlock in the 1980s animated series. Cullen also played Prime in the previous Transformers game, and in all three of the recent movies.

Other veteran voice actors working on the new game include Nolan North, who has been in everything ever including Assassin's Creed, God of War and the Call of Duty Series, and Troy Baker, who voiced Two-Face and Robin in Batman: Arkham City.

The original Transformers series was broadcast between 1984 and 1987; however, the entire franchise received a relaunch in 1992, bringing the animated series to a new audience.

Fall of Cybertron tells the story behind the Transformers' exodus from their home planet, and studio head Peter Della Penna says that story needed genuine voice talent.

"This is the definitive Transformers video game, and we absolutely had to have these iconic voices onboard in order to tell this story.

"Because it's an origins story, we were able to explore some of the coolest characters… and then go after the best and most authentic voice talent possible to do the franchise right.

More and more studios are realising the importance of voice acting as a draw-card, particularly with video game adaptations of classic characters. The perfect example is Kevin Conroy, who gave Batman a voice in the 90s and has since been used in both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is currently in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, with no release date as yet.
