PlayStation 3 delivers NZ's "strongest platform" results in 2010

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand (SCE NZ) has declared that PlayStation 3's performance in 2010 outshines its competitors, despite Microsoft's Xbox 360 claiming the honours of highest-selling console in the Christmas season.

A press release from SCE NZ claims that the PlayStation 3 platform, "in both real and relative terms outperformed other competitive game platforms, in both value and unit growth". Reinforcing this claim, Sony contends that the PS3 placed first  in terms of year-on-year value growth and represents 31.5% of the $158 million New Zealand gaming industry. The company also claims a 32.4% uplift in calendar-year unit sales for the PS3.

According to the figures recently released by GfK, the PS3 accounts for the greatest proportion of hardware sales in the industry, accounting for approximately 34% and representing a hardware value of $72 million. PlayStation 3 also achieved a more than 40% year-on-year increase in peripheral sales, which SCE NZ puts down mostly to the PlayStation Move controller and the PlayTV digital-TV device.

"PlayStation 3, as a platform, continues to outperform and grow," said David Hine, sales and marketing director for Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand. "Our consumers are responding to the increased entertainment content offering, from both our company and our network of partners, enjoying the benefits derived from our ongoing technical innovation, and also the more connected network experiences we continue to offer."
