FYI, this story is more than a year old

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the cumulative global sales of the PlayStation 3 has exceeded 50 million units as of March 29th this year. The company's also chalked up PlayStation Move sales in excess of 8 million units worldwide as of April 3rd. Sony has not specified the source of the sales data in the press release sent to Game Console.

The PlayStation 3 first launched in November 2006, with PlayStation Move launching locally in September last year.

The gap between the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 appears to be closing despite the headstart enjoyed by the Xbox 360, which launched worldwide a year earlier. VGChartz contends that the Xbox 360 currently sits at 52.9 million units (28.1% of the market) compared to the PlayStation 3, which it places at 49.2 million units 26.1% of the market. They're both eclipsed, however, by the Nintendo Wii, which launched in .VGChartz currently places the Wii at 86.3 million units (45.8% of the global console market) despite launching at the same time as the PlayStation 3.
