Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 4 console sold very well in New Zealand last year. Sales have been increasing each year.
NPD Group revealed that PlayStation 4 console sales grew by 10 percent compared to the previous year. In terms of the current console generation, the PlayStation 4 has 65 percent of the market share. The current console generation also includes the Xbox One and Wii U.
The week of Christmas was the best performance for the console in 2015. December 2015 actually became the highest performing month in New Zealand PlayStation history.
Luis Gil, NPD, says, “As PS4 maintains its leadership position in the home console market, it is evident that the home entertainment unit has played an instrumental role in the market success of the New Zealand Interactive Entertainment category.”

PlayStation 4 software sales were also very healthy as it is outselling its closest competitor by double in both value (110%) and units (106%) according to NPD. The best selling first party games in New Zealand were Bloodborne, The Order: 1886 and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Big performers for third party games were Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront.
Sony expects 2016 will be bigger with releases like Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, No Man's Sky and Horizon: Zero Dawn coming out later this year.
