PlayStation 4 sells close to 36 million units worldwide

Sony has announced that PS4 worldwide sales are now close to 36 million units. This is all thanks to a record breaking Holiday season.

Over the 2015 Holiday season, over 5.7 million PS4 units were sold through to customers. This big number brought up PS4 sales to now 35.9 million units. It is becoming Sony's fastest selling console of all time.

Software sales of PlayStation games were also strong. Over the Holiday period, over 35 million PlayStation video games were sold. This figure takes into account both retail and digital sales. PS Plus subscribers increased by more than 60 percent compared to the same period in 2014.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED 4: A Thief’s End, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last Guardian, this coming year."

The PS4 is ahead of its rivals the Wii U and Xbox One. One has to wonder if the console can eventually outsell the PSOne and PS2 consoles.
