Preview: Hands-on with Ratchet and Clank PS4

Netguide had a chance to play Ratchet and Clank on PS4 recently and it is shaping up to be one of the prettiest looking games on the whole console.

Honestly, Ratchet and Clank PS4 has one of the best graphics I have ever seen. The quality is very close to the visual clarity you will see in an animated movie. Not only is every bright and colourful, but the minor things also stand out such as the fur on Ratchet's body to even the ripples inside rivers.

Insomniac Games has described Ratchet and Clank PS4 as more than just a remake. Playing this game first-hand I can say that this is true. Most "remasters" don't offer anything new and the visuals are usually similar to the previous generation. This game however blows away the PS2 original from both a visual and gameplay standpoint.

From what I played of the game so far, it is kind of an origin story retelling the events of how Ratchet first met Clank. Sure there are some elements and levels from the first game, but they are completely unrecognisable because Insomniac Games redid everything so that the game looks and plays more like a modern PS4 title.

The gameplay itself is fun and is what you should expect from a Ratchet and Clank game. Ratchet has access to tons of different weapons and he can upgrade them to make them stronger or buy new ones whenever he can afford it. The different weapons add variety to the gameplay as some enemies are weaker to some weapons more than others and so forth.

Aside from just combat, there are jumping obstacles and a few puzzles that are thrown into the mix. This variety of gameplay shows how Insomniac Games are veterans of the platforming genre. This is unlike Knack which was a game that got boring and repetitive far too easily.

Speaking of Knack, the levels in that game were linear as you were always walking in a straight line. Ratchet and Clank PS4 mixes up the level design a little bit as there are different paths that you can take and some side missions can also be undertaken. In the full game, you could also revisit planets in order to do something you may have missed before.

Overall, Ratchet and Clank PS4 is shaping up to be one awesome game. Hopefully the full game offers the same type of fun that this small preview offered. Look out for our review of the game later this year.
