This is Netgear’s cheapest entry point into network-attached storage (NAS) - devices you hook onto a home router to provide storage and data services (such as video and audio streaming) to every PC in your home.

Pros: It’s a simple little unit to set up, has a good interface that makes sense even to Net novices, and includes plenty of extra nice touches, such as the ability to stream non-copy-protected iTunes libraries.

Cons: It ships with only a single drive; we’d strongly suggest you factor in buying a secondary drive to pop in there to keep your data safe. It’s also rather loud in operation; you wouldn’t want this by your bedside if you’re an apartment dweller.

Verdict: A rock-solid NAS at an attractive price point.
