Born amidst a flurry of online activity, the Royal Baby boy has generated buzz from all ends of the internet.

Arriving on the day Avicii's 'Wake Me Up' became the top streamed Spotify track, Twitter revealed over two million mentions of the news on the social media site.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first-born triggered over 25,300 tweets per minute following an official announcement of the birth on the site at 7.37am BST.

"The scale of the global conversation was immediately apparent," Twitter said.

"Since that announcement, there have been more than two million mentions of the news on Twitter, with well-wishers gathering around hashtags including #RoyalBaby, #RoyalBabyBoy and #RoyalBabyWatch."

The peak in conversation on Twitter about the news came at 8:37pm BST in the minutes following the announcement of the baby's birth.

"As royal-watchers all over came together to share their excitement, the hashtag #RoyalBaby became the gathering place for messages of congratulations," Twitter said.

"Since the Duchess was admitted to hospital, that hashtag alone has been used more than 900,000 times on Twitter."

While @ClarenceHouse was the official source of information on Twitter, the social media giant said photographer Jesal Parshotam (@therealjesal) staked a claim to being the first to break the #RoyalBaby news, sending this tweet below at 5:55am BST:
