Rumour: Next Microsoft, Sony consoles due 2014
Thu, 21st Apr 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Kotaku reports, citing "industry sources", that the next-generation home consoles from Microsoft and Sony will not immediately toe it with the next Nintendo console that's rumoured to release next year. Instead, Kotaku's sources contend that the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles won't hit retail until 2014.

"Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better," said one of Kotaku's industry insiders. Kotaku claims that this report has been anonymously verified by other, unrelated industry sources who understand the same.

"I think we'll see a game of chicken between Sony and Microsoft," said industry analyst Billy Pidgeon of M2 Research to Kotaku. "Sony definitely isn't launching a successor before 2014 and could stand to benefit by having Microsoft launch first as PS3 builds in to North America and builds a strong position in Europe. Microsoft claims there's a lot more room in Xbox 360 for developers to max out, but here PS3 could have a strong advantage."
