FYI, this story is more than a year old

Samsung has redefined its focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) and announced a range of new products at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, including SUHD TVs, an intelligent home appliance, and wearable and tablet devices.

“Samsung has continuously worked to help people live smarter lives, and this year we have taken a huge step forwards with our diverse, IoT-enabled products and services,” says Tim Baxter, Samsung Electronics America, president and chief operating officer.

SUHD TVs

Samsung's new SUHD TVs feature a bezel-less curved design, cadmium-free 10-bit Quantum dot display for better picture quality, and the smartest user experience.

Dubbed as the future of display technology, Quantum dot display converts light into nearly any colour in the visible spectrum without distortion or compromising the brightness level.

Built on the Tizen operating system (OS), the new Samsung Smart TV will automatically recognise the type of set-top box, game console, OTT box or home theatre system that is connected to the TV, allowing users to control external devices with the Smart Control remote.

Home Appliances

Samsung also revealed the new Family Hub Refrigerator, a new category of IoT technology applied home appliance targeted at families and designed to provide new ways to manage, shop and prepare food.

Its centrepiece is a 21.5 Full HD LCD touchscreen, which can be used as a digital command centre for the connected home, according to the company.

The Family Hub's Key capabilities include:

  • Food Management: Three built-in cameras take a photo of the inside of the refrigerator every time the door is closed. These pictures can be accessed via a smartphone. In the United States, Samsung has also partnered with MasterCard to offer an online shopping experience through the Family Hub Refrigerator. Using the app on the refrigerator's touchscreen, consumers can find and purchase items from multiple retailers from their kitchen, and then complete a checkout process that accepts U.S.-issued credit and debit cards. Local availability of this feature is yet to be confirmed.
  • Family Communication Centre: Users can write notes, post photos, share calendars and artwork on the refrigerator's touchscreen or using their smartphone if they are away.
  • Connected Entertainment: The fridge has built-in stereo speakers so users can stream music or TV content from their Samsung Smart TVs to the touchscreen, as well as connecting from the refrigerator to their own Bluetooth speakers.

Mobile and wearable technology

Samsung also introduced the Gear S2 classic with two colour variants - Rose Gold and Platinum.

According to Samsung, the Gear S2 will offer expanded compatibility to devices running on iOS, making the smartwatch accessible to a wider range of mobile users.

The company also announced the availability of a selection of additional apps to both the Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic, including Uber and eBay.

In addition, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab Pro S, which combines Samsung's technology with Microsoft Windows 10 and is designed to work with a full-sized keyboard cover for maximum usability.

It integrates key features of laptops and tablets to ensure users have access to full notebook PC functionality in a lightweight tablet.
