Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

Gaming through the time capsule has never been as exciting as having 40 of the best retro games on one disc! And this massive collection of some of Sega’s best 16-bit games will definitely take some of you way, way back. Although there are bound to be personal favourites you may not see included here, there is no denying that Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe have got to be two of the all-time faves.
Ah, the wonderful pixels! And you’ll get to enjoy it all in HD. Although it’s clearly evident how dated some of these games are (HD does have its limitations), you shouldn’t have any problem finding something fun on this disc to kill a few hours.
The selection is good, with games like Golden Axe, Sonic and Streets of Rage, and unless you’re a truly hardcore Sega fan, you shouldn’t be too disappointed. There is mulitplayer support as well, which is serious fun (Golden Axe with two players is a must). The midi-quality sound effects and background music will be a constant reminder of how old some of the games are (some dating back to 1989), but that’s also what makes retro games so unique.
The menu is easy to navigate, with equally easy control schemes depending on the game. It’s a great way to experience games that were created to be simplistic in their design, yet allowing you to have hours of fun.
The disc’s extras include a trivia section and a collection of videos from the original game developers, which can be interesting viewing if you’re keen to learn the stories behind some of these retro masterpieces.
The Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is jam-packed with retro favourites from a bygone era of gaming where simplicity was the key to fun. It would be hard to find a collection this varied of Sega classics anywhere else. Forty games on one disc, even if they’re old, is still a super bargain!
