The TechDay Weekender - Feb 26th 2011

On Tuesday midday Twitter began to light up with word that another major earthquake struck Christchurch at around 1pm, February 22nd.

Pretty much everything else stopped as word rapidly filtered through about the tragedy that initially unfolded via Twitter.

All our major telecommunications companies did a great job of issuing updates throughout each day about services in Christchurch.

Google came to the rescue by knocking together a Christchurch response site, which listed useful phone numbers, news updates, real-time Twitter posts, videos and the Google Person Finder.

In case you missed it, Telecom is asking the public to donate any old analogue landline phones so they can be sent to Christchurch and given to people without power.

Internet scammers quickly jumped on the Christchurch earthquake as an opportunity to try and rip people off. But NetSafe was just as quick at issuing a warning.

As a result of the quake, Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson and Government Statistician Geoff Bascand announced that the March 8th census will not be held.
