TiVo hits the shelves

The TiVo media device is now on sale through Telecom retail outlets.

TiVo lets you watch and record free-to-air TV channels, but also features the CASPA On-Demand service that allows consumers to download new-release movies and television shows on a ‘pay as you use’ basis. The CASPA service is independent from the free-to-air channels delivered over the Freeview network, and is available exclusively to Telecom broadband customers.

There are different price points for different movies and different TV shows. New-release movies will cost $6.95 to download, favourite movies $4.95, and TV shows will be free, or $1.95 or $2.95 per episode. The new-release movies will remain on your hard drive for up to two weeks. More movies will be added every month and all are on-demand.

TiVo will also carry Sony’s service, which will launch in New Zealand in late November. The service will offer roughly one million songs at launch, and users can download as much content as they desire for a monthly fee of $9.95. A limited selection of content, including all music videos, will be available free of charge.
