[Update]CES: LG smartphone unveiled

LG has officially announced its LG GW990 – a smartphone that will run Intel’s powerful Moorestown CPU – at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The LG GW990, running the Moblin or “Mobile Linux” operating system, will release internationally in the second half of 2010. Among its features are a 4.8-inch panoramic widescreen display, HD video, GPS, digital compass, wi-fi and a 5 megapixel camera. In keeping with the hot topic of this year’s CES, it also reportedly supports 3D gaming.

Of special note, the phone’s widescreen display splits into three vertical panels in landscape mode. Each panel can be controlled independently of the others, allowing the use of three applications simultaneously.

UPDATE (3.51pm): Apparently several operating system options will be available upon purchase, not just the Moblin OS as reported previously based on the units demoed at CES.
