Vector's new EV charging app wants to ease 'range anxiety' for Kiwi drivers

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Vector is making efforts to put 'range anxiety' to rest for electric vehicle (EV) drivers across the country, with the launch of its new EV charging app.

The app will provide real-time information for EV drivers, so they can plan their journey to include the 20 current Vector charging stations across the country.

Users can find and get directions to EV chargers, find out the charger type (standard or rapid) and whether it's compatible with the vehicle's port type.

Vector CEO Simon Mackenzie adds that the app can also communicate live charger statuses, such as whether one is currently being used. A built-in search function allows users to search by port type, charger type and availability.

While Vector's stations are included automatically, the company invites other to provide details of their charging stations so that an all-inclusive app can be built.

Mackenzie says that providing details about whether a charging station is in the area will increase peace of mind for users, particularly those who are travelling long distances.

“We want to make it as easy as possible so that people choose to drive EVs over traditional fossil fuelled vehicles," he says.

Vector has committed to install nine more rapid chargers and five standard chargers in the coming months, in addition to the 20 currently in service.

The app is the first of its kind to be developed for New Zealand and complements the interactive charger station map on the company's website. Vector says it also supports the government's initiative to increase EV uptake in New Zealand.

Vector's 'EV Charging' app is now available on the App Store and Google Play.
