Owners of stolen iPhones and iPads have been warned against using the devices’ tracking features to find and confront thieves.

Several recent cases have been reported of consumers tracking their stolen devices using online functions like Find My iPhone.

The functions are able to locate the devices using their GPS signals.

However, owners have been warned not to approach thieves themselves if they manage to track down the devices.

NZ Police told 3News that people are better off contacting them to avoid the risk of confrontation.

Suspecting your property is at an address does not give you any more legal right to enter, they add.
