This morning's #Ger vs #Arg final of the Fifa World Cup (no, sorry, no more hashtags!) saw 32.1 million tweets sent in the 120 minutes of play.

When the final whistle sounded and Germany claimed their fourth championship, Twitter saw 618,725 tweets per minute – a Twitter record for an event.

Other peak moments came after Mario Gotz scored – at 556,499 tweets per minute; and after Argentina's Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball and was declared best player, and Germany's Manuel Neuer received the Golden Glove and was declared best goalkeeper – with Twitter scoring 395,773 tweets per minute.

Gotze and Messi were, unsurprisingly, the players most tweeted about during the final, followed by Neuer and Christoph Kramer for Germany and Gonzalo Higuain and Javier Mascherano for Argentina.

Across the entire tournament up to the final, Messi had been the most tweeted about Argentine player, but Mesut Ozil claimed top spot for Germany.

Twitter also took a look at what has happened to each final team's follower growth since the first match, discovering that @DFB_Team and @Argentina had increased their followers by 62% and 139% respectively.

Oh and, incidentally, according to Twitter, New Zealand appeared to be favouring Germany, more than Argentina, with more Kiwi tweets about Germany than Argentina between June 12 and July 09.

Perhaps final word should go to Ozil, who was among the players tweeting on-field and locker room selfies. 'Greatest day of my life! #WorldCup #Worldchampions'.
